Choose the Best LION Fire Helmet for You

Choosing the best fire helmet comes down to finding the best fire safety headgear that combines lightweight durability with comfort. When it comes to durable comfort and high-performance protection, LION fire helmets are among the most popular. LION is a trusted name in turnout gear, providing seven of the 10 largest first departments in the United States. The American Classic and American Legend are our best-selling models. The American Heritage is also popular, but since it is leather, it is considerably higher in cost. Usually, the American Legend helmet is purchased by the individual firefighter.

American Classic

Lion American Classic fire helmet
The American Classic by LION is the traditional safety helmet look, yet it’s lightweight. The shell is made of a laminated, glass-fiber-infused polyisocyanurate foam core called TherMax™. It ensures durability and heat protection without adding weight. Firefighters don’t need a heavy helmet to get proper protection. Modern technology and composites eliminated the need for heavy headgear. This LION fire helmet one of the most popular helmets because of its lightweight protection and center of gravity adjustment system. This lets you adjust the balance according to your preferences and keeps the helmet in place. The American Classic offers a custom fit with its font and back suspension straps and side straps, which help keeps the fire helmet from moving and prevents it from becoming top-heavy. Flannel ear covers and a cushioned headband add to the reasons why the American Classic is one of the most popular firefighter helmets on the market.

American Legend

LION American Legend Helmet
The LION American Legend helmets are fiberglass, offering outstanding head, eye, ear, and neck protection that’s lightweight at just 50 to 56ounces. The Legend has an integrated retractable eye guard for easy deployment and added protection from fireground debris. The American Legend helmet edge has a no-melt aluminum core. The ratcheting headband with foam wrap adjusts to fit head sizes 5.5 to 9.5. The LION American Legend helmet is a high-value option in comfortable, low-profile, protective headgear.

American Heritage

LION brand American Heritage fire helmet
The American Heritage is a tribute to earlier made, traditional leather helmets. LION’s Paul Conway American Heritage Helmet is still popular among collectors and fire gear enthusiasts. Today’s contemporary version combines time-honored styling and craftsmanship with state-of-the-art advancements in design, leather tanning, and composites. The American Heritage offers heat and impact protection in a handcrafted, low-profile leather fire helmet. LION’s chromium tanning process seals its protective traits and deflects heat, so the American Heritage LION fire helmet doesn’t chip or bubble like other leather helmets.

Should I Replace My Fire Helmet?

Per NFPA 1851 Standard on Selection, Care, and Maintenance of Protective Ensembles for Structural Fire Fighting and Proximity Fire Fighting, all PPE equipment coats, pants, helmets, boots, and gloves, regardless of the condition, must be retired 10 years after the manufacturer date. Except for the helmet shell, LION Helmets™ are designed to allow the user to remove and replace most components in the field before that 10-year period ends. Contact us to order replacement parts.

Care for Your Lion Fire Helmet

A trained professional should perform regular advanced inspections of your fire helmet to determine whether it can be safely used. If you have questions about your protective helmet, you should contact an expert within your department, LION, a LION TotalCare® Center, or a verified Independent Service Provider (ISP) of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). We encourage firefighters to inspect their helmet (and all equipment) at the start of each shift and after any exposure, impact, chemical, or active duty. Clean your fire helmet regularly. To ensure safety, inspect your Lion Fire Helmet for the following:
